Cherry Blossoms in our Nation's Capital

My favorite time of year to visit Washington DC is during the peak bloom of the Cherry Blossoms. The Cherry Blossom Festival continues to expand and has included a parade for years. I visited the peak bloom this year on Friday March 25 and it always awes me with the breathtaking views along the tidal basin. I like to go early in the morning before the big crowds come in.

This year's Cherry Blossom Festival is slated for March 20 to April 17 and includes a Kite festival on Saturday March 26, a parade on April 9th and a Petal Palooza on Saturday April 16 with live music and fireworks.

These trees along the tidal basin in Washington, DC - not far from the Washington Monument and around the Jefferson Memorial - were first donated by the Japanese in 1912 when President William Howard Taft was in office. I like to visit the monuments nearby and this year saw the sunrise from Lincoln Memorial. Arlington Cemetary is not far away and is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices our men and women have made to keep our freedoms safe. President Kennedy is buried here as well as President Taft. Above Kennedy's grave is the Lee Mansion or Arlington House - one of the best places offering a spectacular view of Washington DC.
