In 1976, I played as the left back and captained the PM field hockey team. I have fond memories of Coach Jane Hoover during our match against Etown in Elizabethtown. Her powerful voice carried across the field, impossible to miss. My teammates nicknamed me "Trotter," a name coined by Barb Huber from the class of 1975, because my long ponytail would bounce like a pony’s tail as I ran. During one game, I made a circular tackle around an opponent. Coach Hoover’s voice boomed as she shouted to her team, something like, “You’re letting her run circles around you!”

I have many fond memories from playing field hockey at Penn Manor and Millersville University. During my junior year abroad in Marburg, West Germany (as it was then), I continued playing. In Germany, field hockey teams were organized by towns, not universities. Women trained alongside the men’s team - it made us women better players because the men were stronger and faster. It was fun to pass my love for the gam to my daughter Gretchen (class of 1998) who also played field hockey with Penn Manor.
